DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
B Sc Zoology Model II Aquaculture is a three year Vocational regular course of M G University started in December 1999.
It has Zoology as main subject and aquaculture as vocational subject. Other specialties of the course are that the students have to undergo one On the Job Training (OJT) Programme, and field study and institutional visit to research institutions like CMFRI, CIFT and NIFPHATT.
Students do projects as a part of their curriculum to familiarize with research methodology.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
AQUARIUM HOUSE
There is a well-established aquarium house for intensive training in aquarium setting and management.It is a Project of 15 lakhs under the Plan fund from the Government of Kerala with more than 30 aquarium with almost all varieties of aquarium fishes. It is a unique venture in the history of Kerala to have such a facility in an Arts & Science college. Exhibitions are conducted for public & students. Students undergo hands on training on aquarium preparation and maintenance.
ZOOLOGY LABS
There are three well equipped laboratories in the department – aquaculture lab, biochemistry lab, bioinformatics lab and an instrumentation room. There are several latest and sophisticated instruments such as thermocycler, agarose gel electrophoresis unit, UV transilluminator, vortex mixer, microcentrifuge, waterbath shaker, vertical deep freezer(-25oC). incubator, laminar flow chamber, magnetic stirrer, pH meter, hot air oven, incubator, autoclave, distillation unit, monocular microscope, Clevenger apparatus, haemometer, haemocytometer, sphygmomanometer, distillation apparatus, photo colorimeter, etc
MUSEUM
The zoology museum consists of a good collection of specimens from various animal groups especially fishes. Charts & Models are used as aids in teaching.
