About the Department
Established in 1976, the Department of Geology has grown into a vibrant centre for teaching and research. With the introduction of M.Sc. Geology in 1984 and recognition as a Research Centre in 2023, the department continues to advance academic excellence in Earth Sciences. It is the only department under Mahatma Gandhi University offering research facilities along with undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Geology.
Graduates regularly secure positions in esteemed national and international organizations such as the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India (GAIL), Atomic Mineral Directorate (AMD), National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), various IITs, and top research and academic institutions worldwide.

GIS Laboratory
Equipped with 15 computers and modern geospatial software, the lab provides hands-on training in GIS and access to internet resources.
Analytical Laboratories
Geochemical Lab: pH meter, conductivity meter, flame photometer, spectrophotometer and distillation units; Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) and scope for advanced upgrades.
Petrology & Microscopy: Thin section analysis and fluid inclusion studies.
Groundwater Lab: Aquifer studies and water quality analysis (hardness, turbidity, alkalinity).
Rock Analysis Lab: Rock cutting, grinding, polishing and sieving facilities and advanced microscopes.
Geology Museum
A rich collection of minerals, rocks, ores and fossils from across India for practical learning and identification.
Rock Garden
An outdoor display of large geological specimens, supporting experiential and field-based learning.
